First time I have seen this thread. Mmmmm..... now I am really going to show my age.
When I was younger (lol) we used to race at the Brickyard at Homebush. This was not a circuit or street or long top speed run or anything like that - just a straight drag race - occasionally an up and back. Good thing about this place was no houses, one road in meant no traffic.
I used to run an LH Torana (flared guards, large hotwires and that ridiculous boot spoiler, etc) with a 350 Chev, big port job, etc. May not sound like much today but this is back in the early 80's and a worked 350 Chev in Torana was a pretty potent combination back then - don't know RWHP (really wasn't a bragging point back then) but I'd guess at around late 300's maybe 400 if I was lucky.
Money changed hands - now don't laugh but $50 was a big bet back then - ($10 filled the petrol tank). Some raced for pinks but that was way too serious for me.
No turbos, no ricies, some serious drag boys - but we knew better than to take them on. Usually raced Cortinas (easy pickings-lol), Falcon GT's, Chargers, Monaro's, and some American muscle like Camaros, Firebirds etc.
Cops knew about the races, and would come down, they knew just about everyone there and provided we played by their rules we were okay. Occasionally got some newbie cop who thought he would make a name for himself and hand out some Canary's (yep I picked up a couple).
Again I must be getting older now as I wouldn't even dream of racing on the roads - too frightened of hurting myself, the car or worse, someone else.
