Ok Its time for the last feature car for 2008 and we thought we would leave you with a Tuff as Nails 1967 XR Fairmont belonging to John Kay AKA Tuff XR. John was responsible for helping us organise some of the Mexican muscle that has been seen over the past few months. Originally the XR had a stock as a stock 302 Windsor with an early case C4, being only the 3rd owner it was basically an original car beside the House of Colour Purple Pearl paint. It was driven around like that for 12 months and in November ‘07 it was taken off the road for what John calls a “minor re-build”. The minor rebuild included a Stroker 387 Clevo, a fully manulised C4, nine inch diff, new suspension, fuel system to suit the angry 387 and some Centreline Auto Drag wheels. Hahah yeah right just a “minor re-build”. The bottom end has been together for almost 18 years, every 18 months or so i gets a birthday receiving rings, bearings and a thorough check over. …On pass number five it all went BANG with a nice fire ball…“Got it home only to find I had two bent push rods and one broken rocker tip, I had the heads of and no other damage, just a bit lucky I think”. .. had it back to Heathcote mid/late April, but this time with the gas fitted. The best time for the day was a 10.40 @ 128mph..“Back at the track 2 weeks ago, we wound the gas up to 250. The first 2 passes felt a little tail happy, 3rd pass took a little timing out and at about the 120 foot mark she went bang big time. Thanks christ for tail shaft loops. It totally destroyed a set of Mark Williams gears, tail shaft and the extension housing when you looked at the centre the billet spool was still there with nothing around it”. “Before i broke it she went 10.50 @ 121 mph Naturally Aspriated and 10.20 @ 131mph on the gas” What’s Next? “I’m thinking of importing a full alloy 408, Blue Thunder Heads and a Yates Manifold”.
