Not your average burnout event, The Ultimate Burnout Challenge (
TUBC) had attracted 87 of Australia’s finest burnout machines, all anxious to vapourise their tyres. Melbournes weather however had a different idea as to how this day would unfold, after the devastating heat of the past few months, the clouds blanketed the morning sky and proceeded to **** down copious amounts of rain. This however didn’t seem to deter the entrants, promoters or Mr Optimistic (Jason Bean aka Loudmouth - pictured above), all of whom were keen to wait out the rain for some burnout action, with $10,000 smackers on the line .
By early afternoon the rain had subsided and it was time to dry off the track with what else but a few skids! [
vids of the track drying experience] . All these skids were unjudged, so it gave competitors a chance to have a little fun, get to know the track and most importantly DRY the track!
The mud and rain couldn’t come close to stopping this dedicated bunch from getting their machines ready for action. ONBOC (Donny Elphick - pictured above) spent the morning changing over blower gaskets in the new found dust free environment of Avalon Speedyway’s pit area! Despite the muddy conditions, the gasket was changed and Donny managed a top ten placing for his efforts!
A few spectators took it upon themselves to entertain themselves whilst waiting for the skids to start - interesting how any *sane* person could decide getting inside a rubbish bin and rolling down a hill could be a good idea, but hey it was funny to watch!
With the track now dry, judges took their stations and entrants slid across the mud to the burnout pad. First judged skid off the ranks was COPTZE (
COPTZE video) a tough blown VP commodore followed by an array of tough cars all sacrificing tyres for the hungry tyre gods!
The quality of entrants meant that everyone was giving it just that much more which always equates to a whole lot of flames followed by engine parts strewn over the pad. TUBC wasn’t without it’s fair share of blow ups with CMEFRY the first to show how easy it is to disassemble your motor at 8,000rpm (see image above and below)!
The seemingly indestructible engine of Leroy Rees (BIGV8) was put to rest after having a new inspection hole made in the side of it at full noise! No doubt BIGV8 will return bigger and better than ever!

The spectators truly do deserve a big mention, the weather was atrocious or worse, yet just over 1200 people passed through the gates all looking to get their burnout fix. Congrats on a job well done Steve Loader, Leroy Rees, Clint Ogilvie and their partners - also to all the volunteers - can’t wait for next year!
