I had a HQ 2-door Monaro when i was on my 'p's, only had it for a couple of weeks and was racing some dude in a falcon around my town, i was trying to get away from him and took a corner at a impossible speed and jumped the gutter . It took a front tyre completely off and pushed the front cragar wheel into the sill panel and made the control arms look like bananas.
Funny thing i didn't even stop 'cause i was **** scared of the cops coming so i limped it straight to a mates place sparkes flying everywhere, people coming out of their houses, it didn't steer very good .
When i got to my mates place and couldn't open the drivers door i then sort of realised what i had done

oh no no good. We use to go down the m4 leave at midnight and we would all pull up somewhere on the freeway usually round the penrith area and race down the freeway. It was so funny we would all be stopped on the side of the road. Two cars would race and then reverse up the break down lane and then another two cars would go. We just use to do this for fun pretty stupid when you look back but wont forget it.

theres alot here but its pretty harmless, cops are everywhere so now we all meet up at the beach carpark and just sit there talkn, if someone wants a race we head out to the 'quartar mile' which is a marked road out of town, no houses in site. race out there all ya want and not get caught, even talked to 60 year old blokes who reckon they raced on the same stretch back in their day. cops leave us alone unless we are causing trouble or someone gets hurt (dumb asses that keep on going an extra 500m and miss the corner)

Up until a couple of years ago I used to compete in a few street activities, early on in Melbourne around Dandy & chelsea areas, plus Cranbourne. Some "big name" people in the performance industry were also in attendance usually. Some of those guys would not like to be named I'm sure as you see them in a all the magazines nowdays.......

All sorts of things raced from r100 rotars to full on perspex windowed drag cars that arrived on trailers, then raced for big bucks (at the time from $100-$500 a race) it was generally well controlled & didn't have the dickhead element as it seems to today.

There was also a big scene in Ballarat & Geelong, the best strip in Ballarat now has housing development nearby so I'm not sure where the action is now....

I participated a few times in my LX hatch with a stout 400sbc, my Lj gtr with a 355, big block HJ ute plus my HJ prem with a wild 308 over the years plus a couple more. When done in a "controlled" way there was no trouble & everyone had a good night until the scanners alerted us to any cops nearby, then it was split & hope not to get a canary.

To give any specific recount of an event would not be wise on here & is best left to face to face talking I think.

entry fee was 2 k winner takes all.

if it was a close finish you would give the second place something cause it was close.

i won a couple of them but then they started patrolling it pretty hard so we moved and started running from penrith too lithgow and back.

we had some pretty wild accidents and some pretty hefty fines too lol.

but had plenty of fun. its a pretty awsome feeling when ya going down the F3 doing bout 250 clicks hehehehehe.

we found out back then that the cameras couldnt take a pic of ya number plate over 210k's. they changed it pretty quick now ya have too be doing something stupid like 300 + or something.

i keep it all on the track now a days. got a wife and kids now have too be kinda sensible lol

seriously ? 40k for a race to newcastle and back? that's insane. I know there were reports not so long ago of similar happenings in qld (~2 years back). Therewere huge groups of cars racing for money on public roads and they were pretty organised by the soudns of ittoo...

yer it was pretty insane. But it was very well organised. Quite a few of us worked in the same industry's so we had pretty good communication between us. We all had scanners (duh ya need them when travelling fast enough too break every law known too man) We also had high frequency radios so we could talk too each other too know what was going on.

There was only bout 2 times i remember that the cops chased us but as soon as they realised we were doing over 200 clicks they had too stop the chase.
it did make for some very interesting runs thou. coming thru wyong there at over 200 clicks is a bit a of an awsome feeling thats for sure. if ya were lucky enough too win then ya were even happier lol.

cheers
ian
