Default Ideas for traction/launch

G'day all

Just wanting to get some advise/ideas for better traction on take off.I am running about 500hp c4 mania used auto with 4500 stall, trans brake and dual stage msd. 3.77 9 inch and leaf spring rear with fixed traction bars. Problem is even setting msd down to 2,500 rpm it just straight up on the 4,500 stall and lights the slicks. I am currently having to only give about 1/4 throttle until I've moved off and gained traction before I can stomp on it.
I'm sure if I could get it working right I should be able to pop the front wheels

Any suggestions?

Can't really go mini tubs or bigger tyres as it's street registered car and dont want to go through inspections again.

What sort of revs do people leave the line at and what size stall convertors are people using?

- I run stock leaf springs as they came from the factory (no extra leafs)
- Cal-track bars adjustable
- -7deg pinion angle facing down, if your facing up you will unload the tyres
- Rancho single adjustable shocks
- Leave on 5,500rpm at 650hp/700lbs torque at this rpm transbrake
- Tyre size is big at 30x10.5'' and is mini tubbed
- Front end very heavy with a bigblock, standard front shocks from repco.

- Cal-track bars with the Ranchos and get your pinion angle to -5 minimum.
- Clamp up your leaf springs so they don't separate, front and rear
- Leave to the line with all the power you have and keep adjusting and testing

Hope this helps,
Elvio

Ok, thanks again.

Now for setting up the caltrax. Do you guys have them sitting on the top of the spring or how much clearance do allow between the spring and the the point of contact on the caltrac? I guess it depends on track condition and tyre grip but any ideas of a starting point?
Oh and is there a problem with running them on the streets? Will it have an effect on the handling of the car?
Thanks again

- I leave mine with 1/2'' clearance, caltrack recommend touching then one turn
preload evenly adjusted.

- Shocks, run them as hard as possible until it starts turning the tires over the
bumps in the track, then soften them up to get your happy medium, That is with single adjustable Ranchos, extension is only adjustable.

- Driving on the street will improved cornering handling but will be stiff as with
preload, with clearance will have clunking noises.

- This set up would easily run a 9sec pass with 26x8 slicks and in the 1.35
60 foot with 600+HP

- Some pics of my mates cars, except for the Mustang (random pic)

Cheers Elvio

Thanks again Lubeman. I set em up today just resting on springs and with the few attempts I tried with trans brake and 2 stage rev limit set to 3,500rpm and 3,000rpm car still lit up the rear althogh it did get reasonable purchase when backed out of throttle and eased back in.

I've just entered next meet at A.I.R on the 12th of feb so see how it goes on the track.

Lubeman , what is the reason you run your with so much clearance when caloric say to have the resting on spring plus a turn?

Thanks again

Kameron

- The car is consistent as and with minor tune up changes etc it responds.

- The reason 1.30 in the sixty and with the big clearance 1.27 sixty foot.

- Over 300 passes down the 1/4 mile with leaf springs i have tested alot.

- One problem i had and emailed John Calvert was my rear tyres would unload while the front wheels where in the air and could only see this in slow-mo.
Calverts answer, was your on your own as back then 2003 i was the quickest car N/A that he knew about and just said go one way then the other with settings.

- Every car is going to be different depending on HP levels etc, the changes i have done over 50-80 runs gave me over 4 tenths and got me into the 8's and cost me $0, now thats fun.

- Keep at it and one change at a time and it will payoff. You will love it.

- I have got my car down to 8.84 and still have more sh$$t to try.

- Record your car from the rear and use that as a tool also as the speed of the diff separation etc is to fast for the naked eye to follow.

- Watch my car in this footage and you will see what i mean.
Ford Capri 460 big block goes eights wsid - YouTube

- Have fun at the meeting,

Regards Elvio
